Background

A candidate who scored below the cutoff in an interview for a fresh Professor recruitment argued AICTE's Career Advancement (promotion) Regulations should have governed her selection instead, without ever objecting to the interview process beforehand.

Decision Breakdown

The Supreme Court held promotion regulations for existing employees don't apply to fresh, direct recruitment, "the law does not permit a regulation crafted as a ladder to be used as a gate", and that a candidate who took the interview without objection cannot challenge the rules after losing.

Lesson Learnt

If you take part in a selection process without objecting to its rules beforehand, you generally cannot challenge those rules afterward just because you didn't succeed.
