M.C. Mehta v. Union of India & Ors.
Background
This is an interim order, not a final judgment. In a continuing public interest case on air pollution in Delhi and the National Capital Region, the Court recorded further measures on traffic, construction and waste burning in its order of 16 December 2015.
Decision Breakdown
This is an interim order, not a final judgment. The Court restricted entry of commercial vehicles not bound for Delhi at the NH-8 and NH-1 entry points, and required Delhi-bound goods vehicles to pay twice the earlier entry charge. It banned new registrations of diesel private cars and SUVs of 2000 cc and above in the NCR until 31 March 2016 and set 1 March 2016 as the deadline for taxis to move to CNG. It also directed road repair and vacuum cleaning, enforcement of construction-dust norms and a bar on burning solid waste. It adjourned the case to 5 January 2016 with all pending applications.
Lesson Learnt
There is no final ruling yet in the case. The directions remain in force and the next hearing was set for 5 January 2016.
