R. Balakrishna Bhat & Ors. etc. v. Bank of Baroda & Ors. etc.
Background
The appellants, bank employees/retirees, had their writ petitions against Bank of Baroda allowed by a Single Judge of the Madras High Court. A Division Bench of the same High Court reversed that decision, relying on its own earlier ruling in a connected case (Indian Overseas Bank v. C.R. Chandrasekaran), which the Supreme Court had itself already upheld in 2017. The present appeals (along with two review petitions) challenged that reversal.
Decision Breakdown
The Supreme Court held that the controversy here was identical to the issue already decided the same day in a companion case, Union Bank of India vs. United Bank of India Retirees' Welfare Associations and others. Since the legal question was the same, the Court dismissed these appeals and review petitions "in terms of" its judgment in that companion matter, without repeating independent reasoning in this order. No order as to costs was made.
Lesson Learnt
When multiple appeals raise the identical legal question, courts commonly decide one "lead" matter in detail and dispose of the rest by simply applying that reasoning, so a short-looking order can still be a full and final disposal of the appeal before it.
