In Re-Inhuman Conditions in 1382 Prisons
Background
This is an interim order, not a final judgment. In its own-motion case on conditions in prisons, the Court decided that a committee should examine prison reform.
Decision Breakdown
This is an interim order, not a final judgment. The Court directed the Union to constitute a Supreme Court Committee on Prison Reforms chaired by a former Supreme Court judge, set its terms of reference, including overcrowding, unnatural deaths, staffing, women and juvenile prisoners and open prisons, and asked it to report in about 12 months.
Lesson Learnt
There is no final ruling yet. A committee will recommend reforms to the Court.
