Ram Charan Singh Prajapati v. State of U.P. & Ors.
Background
This appeal challenged a judgment dated 2 September 2014 of the Allahabad High Court in Writ-C No. 46350 of 2014. The case was heard together with, and treated as governed by, a separate "main" Civil Appeal of 2015 (arising out of SLP(C) No. 36166 of 2014) in which the Supreme Court had already passed a detailed judgment on the same point of law. This is the short disposal order for this connected appeal; it does not itself repeat the detailed reasoning, which lies in the lead matter.
Decision Breakdown
The Supreme Court held that, in view of its detailed judgment already rendered in the main connected appeal (SLP(C) No. 36166 of 2014) covering the same issue, this appeal must also be dismissed, upholding the impugned High Court judgment, but without imposing costs on the appellant. Leave was granted, and the appeal was finally disposed of in these terms. The appeal was finally decided by applying the ratio of the lead case; the detailed reasoning is in that companion judgment.
Lesson Learnt
When the Supreme Court decides a batch of connected appeals raising an identical legal issue, it often delivers one detailed judgment in a "lead" matter and briefly disposes of the remaining tagged appeals by applying that same ruling: a short disposal order of this kind is still a final, binding decision on that appeal, not an unresolved or pending matter.
